Brea sits right next to Fullerton, and the two cities blend into each other enough that it's easy to treat them as one dining map. This is the Brea side of it — the restaurants worth a special trip, and a couple worth knowing to avoid.
The Standouts
Prime Pizza exceeded our expectations more than once — genuinely fresh, homemade-tasting pizza, which is harder to find than it should be. The unusual compliment I can pay it: we usually end up with leftovers when we order pizza, and this was one of the rare times we didn't.
Fogo de Chão Brazilian Steakhouse is where we went for my wife's birthday, and it delivered — excellent, knowledgeable service, and a market buffet that's genuinely authentic rather than a generic salad bar bolted onto a steakhouse concept. Worth saving for an occasion rather than a casual Tuesday.
Lucille's Smokehouse Bar-B-Que gets it right on atmosphere as much as food — a welcoming environment with nice music running through it, attentive service, and barbecue that holds up its end of the bargain.
Slapfish was a first-time try that turned into a repeat favorite — the fish was delicious, the fries scrumptious, and the fish tacos were good enough that we're already planning to go back.
Good for a Casual Family Meal
Rubio's Coastal Grill is a reliable pick, particularly if you've got kids — ours particularly enjoyed their food, and it's the kind of casual coastal-Mexican-seafood menu that's easy to please a group with.
Two Honest Warnings
Not every chain location performs the same, and it's worth calling out when one doesn't. The Panera Bread in Brea specifically was a disappointing experience — a case where the Fullerton location we usually go to has set a much higher bar. And the McDonald's here has had real cleanliness issues on more than one visit — the kind of thing that suggests a location that's either understaffed or dealing with bigger internal problems. Neither is a reason to avoid the chains generally, just this particular location of each.
Practical Notes
- Special occasions: Fogo de Chão is the pick if you're celebrating something — book ahead, it's popular for exactly that reason.
- With kids: Rubio's and Prime Pizza are both easy, low-stress choices for a family meal.
- Brea Mall area: Several of these spots (Slapfish, the chain restaurants) cluster near Brea Mall, making it easy to combine a meal with errands or shopping in the same trip.
