El Portal Mexican Grill is a genuinely warm, family-run spot that doesn't try to be anything fancier than it is, and that's exactly its appeal. The food was surprisingly good given how unassuming the exterior looks, and most seats have a view out over Lake Isabella, which turns a casual meal into something worth lingering over. Don't judge this one by its storefront.
