Best Places to Visit in Paris

I've lived in Paris long enough to stop counting the times I've walked past the Eiffel Tower and still looked up. The city rewards repeat visits, and the places below are the ones I keep coming back to, whether I have an afternoon or a whole week. This list is ranked by how much they've shaped my own love for the city.

đŸ„‡ 1. MusĂ©e du Louvre

Musée du Louvre Paris

Yes, it's crowded, and yes, you'll probably join the scrum around the Mona Lisa. Go instead for the Denon wing's Italian paintings and the Winged Victory of Samothrace at the top of the Daru staircase, and you'll have whole rooms nearly to yourself. Arrive right at opening on a weekday evening, when the late openings are much calmer.

📍 Location: Rue de Rivoli, 1st arrondissement (Palais Royal-MusĂ©e du Louvre metro)

đŸ„ˆ 2. Tour Eiffel

Tour Eiffel Paris

Skip the midday line and book a timed-entry ticket for sunset, when the tower lights start flickering on the hour after dark. The views from the second floor are my favorite, since you can actually see the city's rooftops and the bends of the Seine. If you have the time, walk up the Champ de Mars at dusk, when the lawn fills with picnickers and the tower glows gold.

📍 Location: Champ de Mars, 7th arrondissement

đŸ„‰ 3. MusĂ©e d'Orsay

Musée d'Orsay Paris

Housed in a magnificent former railway station, this museum holds the best collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art anywhere in the world. Stand at the giant clock windows on the top floor for a view across the Seine toward the Louvre, then wander through the Van Gogh, Monet, and Degas rooms. It's easy to lose an entire afternoon here without noticing.

📍 Location: 1 Rue de la LĂ©gion d'Honneur, 7th arrondissement

4. Notre-Dame de Paris

Notre-Dame de Paris Paris

After the devastating fire of 2019, the cathedral reopened in December 2024, and seeing it restored is a genuinely emotional experience. The rose windows and stone vaulting are as striking as ever, and you can feel the city's history in every corner. Try to visit early in the morning, when the nave is quiet enough to hear your own footsteps.

📍 Location: 6 Parvis Notre-Dame, Place Jean-Paul II, 4th arrondissement (CitĂ© metro)

5. Sainte-Chapelle

Sainte-Chapelle Paris

This tiny Gothic chapel, built in the 1240s to house Christian relics, is my pick for the most beautiful interior in Paris. The upper chapel's walls are almost entirely stained glass, and when the sun hits it in the afternoon, the whole room glows like the inside of a jewel box. Go on a clear day and allow time for the lower chapel too, which is quieter and more intimate.

📍 Location: 10 Boulevard du Palais, Île de la CitĂ©, 1st arrondissement

6. Montmartre and the Basilique du SacrĂ©-CƓur

Montmartre and the Basilique du SacrĂ©-CƓur Paris

Climb the stairs from Abbesses rather than taking the funicular, and you'll pass staircases lined with flowers and little cafes that feel like a village. The white basilica at the top is worth a visit for its mosaics, but the real reward is the view over the entire city, especially at golden hour. Afterward, wander the lanes around Place du Tertre, and avoid the painters who want you to pay for a bad portrait.

📍 Location: 35 Rue du Chevalier de la Barre, 18th arrondissement

7. Musée de l'Orangerie

Musée de l'Orangerie Paris

This small museum is a favorite of mine because it asks so little of you. Its two oval rooms hold Claude Monet's eight enormous Water Lilies panels, which wrap around you so completely that you forget the rest of the world exists. Plan on about an hour, sit on the central benches, and let the light do the work.

📍 Location: Jardin des Tuileries, 75001 Paris, 1st arrondissement

8. Jardin du Luxembourg

Jardin du Luxembourg Paris

This is where Parisians go to actually relax. Grab one of the green metal chairs scattered across the lawns, watch children sail toy boats in the octagonal basin, and admire the Medici Fountain at the far end. In spring the chestnut trees and rose beds make it hard to leave. Bring a baguette and a book, and you'll understand why locals treat it as a second living room.

📍 Location: Rue de Vaugirard, 6th arrondissement (OdĂ©on or RER B Luxembourg)

Final Thoughts

Paris isn't a city you check off in a single trip, and the best days here are often the unplanned ones spent wandering between neighborhoods. Pick a few places from this list, leave room for a long lunch, and let the streets lead you somewhere unexpected. Trust me, you'll be back before you know it.
